Add 6 Inches – Learn To Increase Your Vertical Leap

If you want to learn to increase your vertical leap, you should know a little history first. I think it’s important for anyone who’s wanting to jump higher to know what the mark to beat is.

Who holds the record for the greatest vertical leap in the NBA?
There are a bunch of great players who can easily leap over 40 inches – that’s well over 3 feet – but only one who holds the absolute record. And who is the record holder?

The proud athlete who holds the record for the greatest vertical leap is…..  Michael Jordan at 48 inches. Friends – that’s 4 feet. Straight up. And there are quite a few who are very close;

Spudd Webb – 46″
James White – 46″
Jason Richardson – 46″
Harold Miner – 44″
Nate Robinson – 43″

And the list continues.

Of course, there’s always some disagreement with these numbers as most vertical jumps during games aren’t measured. Other NBA players could very well surpass Michael Jordan’s 48″ without anyone even realizing it! There’s even a disagreement on exactly how to measure a vertical jump. So, reference these numbers with a grain of salt. But these numbers are the “official” numbers, and we’ll use these for our purposes today. For the time being.

You can definitely consider them a nice benchmark for your own progress, though.

But, is there anyone outside the NBA who can jump higher?

Randy Moss, a NFL football player can jump 51 inches!! That’s standing still – he can make 53 inches running. Now, that is quite an accomplishment. But, what about track stars – and other athletes?

Kadour Ziani is a French basketball player from Algeria who, at 5′-9 is billed as the world’s greatest dunker with a vertical leap of 60 inches. That’s 5 feet – taller than many people! Some say he has gone as high as high as 61 inches – 155 centimeters.

What’s the average vertical jump for the NBA?  A measly 28 inches – about 4 inches greater than 2 feet.

No matter who you believe holds the world record for the vertical leap, all of these exceptional athletes share one thing in common – they have all mastered the vertical jump. Speed, strength and stamina are hallmarks of a great athlete, and these men are among the greatest of athletes, for sure.

And, they can be a great role model for the next generation of athletes.

The vertical leap is a power and speed movement that concentrates all available effort on one simple task – lifting a heavy body up and into the air. The one critical point that I have not yet discussed here – exactly how do you measure your vertical leap?

How To Measure Vertical Leap

  • While standing with a shoulder to a wall,  flat-footed on a hard surface (concrete or a gym floor will do), the athlete will fully extend the arm closest to the wall.
  • The point at which the tip of the fingers touches the wall is marked.
  • The athlete will then take several standing jumps (no run-up) and the point at which his or her fingers touches the wall is noted.
  • The difference between the lower and the higher marks is measured – that is the athlete’s vertical jump. It’s mostly common sense.

Using a Laser
An infrared laser can be used to measure a vertical jump as well. When the athlete’s hand breaks the plane of the laser beam, the distance is automatically measured. This method may be more accurate than the first.

The Keys To Your Success
No matter which method you use to measure your progress, the key to increasing your vertical leap is discipline. There are many great exercise programs and methods available to help you increase performance – no single method is always better for all athletes. What works well for one may not necessarily give good results for another.

And, when you do find a program that you like and can live with – you must take action. The failure to take action may well be the most common reason for failure to increase your vertical leap. You must do the exercises – on a regular basis. Most programs are rooted in common sense – the trainers know that good results will come with a little hard work and dedication.

Make this your day – take action, don’t delay and you’ll get a great improvement in your vertical jump.
