Magpul Carbine Fore Grips
Since Y2K fore grips have made a terrific comeback with the armies of the World. Since the early 40s very few weapons had sported a fore grip; the Beretta M12 SMG and Romanian and Hungarian AKs were exceptions. The type of combat experienced in operations post-911 drove the need for a fore grip’s increased control. This is particularly true when maniopulating the weapon in CQB situations, but there are other advantages. Fore grips tend to be a less fatiguing way to hold a weapon and make it easier to manipulate as an impact weapon in close in fighting. They also protect the hand from very hot fore-ends. Rapid follow-up shots are facilitated and it is easier to use switches for battery operated accessories.
Troy are renowned for making some of the best engineered, well thought out weapon accessories out there. The Troy Combat Grip is no exception. The alumnium grip is immensely strong and chequered bands offer a great gripping surface in slippery conditions. The fore grip is Type III hard anodized in either black or matte earth. The grip can be assembled in full length or ‘stubby’ format and includes a dry storage compartment for batteries and other small items. The Troy Combat Grip clamps to the rail ultra-securely with a stainless steel cross bolt and is held in place with a full length locking bar and rear cross bars. This is a high quality unit, but one of the more expensive options and aluminium can be unkind to bare skin in extreme temperatures.
Magpul offer less expensive, but well thought out alternatives to the Troy Combat Grip in their MVG and RVG grips. Both are made of chemical, rust and impact resistant polymer and are available in four colors: OD green; foliage green; dark earth and black. They have a more rectangular format than the Troy, optimized for the ‘thumb break’ hold and offer stippled panels on the side and grooves fore and aft. The Magpul MVG or ‘MOE Vertical Grip’ is intended to attach to the Magpul MOE fore-end or that of the Bushmaster ACR – it doesn’t fit on a rail like most fore grips. The Magpul RVG or Rail Vertical Grip is the same but clamps onto any MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail.
Not everyone shares the assumption that vertical is the way to go. Magpul have always emphasized superior ergonomics in their products and the Magpul AFG Angled Fore Grip offers a different and very well thought out alternative to vertical grips. Angled to offer a natural hold, the Magpul VFG is less fatigue inducing than vertical grips and enables the palm of the hand to support the weapon with the thumb inline with the fore-end. Having the hand closer to the line of recoil helps with recovery and rapid follow up shots. Two versions are produced. The VGF 1 and its shorter, narrower Magpul VFG 2 alternative for weapons with limited fore end rail space. These grips can be used on AKs without obstructing magazine changes. Magpul’s grips are all very light in comparison to metal units.
