MY DOG CHASES SHADOWS!?
I have a 8 month old boxer, over the past few ays she has become obsessed with lights nad shadows, anything that appears to move across the floor. Laser pointers have always drove her Crazzy, but now its everything. Shadows, sunlight, lights ect. It has gotten to the extent that she is chasing her own shadows. While this may very well win us americas funniset home videos, It is concerning because of the level of obsession. SHe has quit relaxing, everytime she notices a shadow or light she chases it, the sunlight coming through the blinds in the bathroom had her digging at the tile for 20 minutes.ANYONE, had this, seen this or know a reason or cure?
THANKS FOR THE ANSWERS, KEEP EM COMING, So far i do agree with Sara, THis seems to be affecting her more than just play its a serious obsession, while i am used to her playing alot, this has gotten out of hand, its like thats all she thinks about.
I’ve read books and articles about dogs developing OCD from playing with laser pointers. They begin to chase shadows, light sources, reflections, etc- that sounds exactly like your dog. You should really talk with your vet and a behaviorist. I’ve read that medication and training need to be combined to help the dog. This could be a serious problem. Digging at the bathroom floor for 20 minutes because of the sunlight isn’t normal or healthy. Your dog needs help.

ETA: Yeah, and it’s not healthy. She’s stopped relaxing and that’s not good for her mind and body. I did some more research for you and found out that ceasing to relax is actually a OCD symptom when its caused by laser pointers. I’m very convinced your dog has OCD. Many times, your dog will require medication from the vet. You need to also find an animal behaviorist that can stop your dog from being so obessed over light sources. Just talk with your vet as soon as possible about your dog’s mental disorder. Your dog can live a somewhat normal life as long as the disorder is being treated. Good luck.
