The Swiss Army Knife – Use It In Any Job Setting

In 1891, Karl Elsener, the owner of a surgical steel company, was dismayed to learn the utility pocket knives issued to the Swiss Army were manufactured in Germany. Elsener felt that any products supplied to Swiss soldiers should be made by Swiss people in Switzerland. Elsener started producing the first of the knives, the Modell 1890, towards the end of 1891 after obtaining the contract. Later, after a few modifications, the rest of the world was able to enjoy the versatility of a Swiss army knife.

The introduction date of any knife model can be determined by its model number. Modell (spelled the German way) 1890, was the first model supplied to the Swiss military and it was meant to be used to assist soldiers to perform maintenance on their rifles and to open cans of food. The knife design included a blade, can-opener bottle opener combo, reamer and a screwdriver. The hand grips made of wood were dark oak in color, replaced later with ebony.

At the end of World War II, US soldiers were able to buy the knives at their PX stores in military camps, but because they could not say Schweizer Offiziersmesser, which is what the knives were known as then, they started calling them Swiss Army Knives and the name stuck and was adopted throughout the world. The Swiss Army designation has been registered as a trademark by Victorinox and its related companies involved in the manufacture of the knives.

The red hand grips with the white cross emblazoned on it, the multiple blades and flip out tools make the Swiss Army Knife the most recognized compact tool kit in the world and it is revered by fishermen, campers, hunters and by anyone who can appreciate this small, portable, quality tool kit capable of performing so many tasks. Enthusiasts can choose from a vast range of models designed to accomplish an equally large range of jobs. There are so many designs to choose from that range between the simple model that has a single blade, a reamer, a screwdriver and a combination of bottle opener and can opener, up to the huge Giant, spanning nine inches across and armed with a total of 87 tools capable of accomplishing 141 separate functions. Furthermore red is not the only color. Increasingly you find people who opt for the black Swiss army knives.

The knives are produced by Victorinox and its subsidiary, Wenger, and one of their most popular knives is the Classic Knife measuring just three inches long and offering great strength without the bulk. This knife sports a keyring, enabling it to be carried on a key chain for convenience. Among the range of tools available on this small wonder, are small blades, a toothpick, tweezers, nail files, scissors, various screwdriver heads and a host of other tools that may never be needed but that are there if they are needed.

The knives have been propelled into the twenty first century by the introduction of the Presentation Master, a futuristic design which features a laser pointer, memory stick and fingerprint scanner that has built in data encryption. All the features of the knife including the laser pointer and data storage drives may be folded away or can be pulled inside the knife on springs while not being used. Because it has no blades, this device may be carried onto aircraft.

The Champion Plus is favored by outdoor lovers and survivalists and it contains things like a serrated small saw, hook remover, fish scaler, punch tool, reamer and plenty more. A waterproof or black leather pouch suitable for carrying on a belt, may be purchased which is convenient for carrying the tool around. Of course there are many models available if you decide to buy a Swiss army knife.

A whetstone or steel may be used to sharpen the knives. Victorinox does recommend using the steel though, and actually supplies a knife blade sharpener for this very purpose. Not many people will deny the versatility of a Swiss army knife.
