Visible Laser Pointer

How powerful will this be?
Hi
Can someone please guide me through the laser MW classification, how powerful each is, and how much damage could be done. I am trying to purchase a green laser pen
(http://www.sourcingmap.com/20mw-532nm-green-laser-pointer-p-13261.html?currency=GBP)
And I’m wondering how powerful this would be?
I don’t want it to damage anything or burn anything, just for the beam to be visible in darkness.
thanks very much
what the hell…can you answer my question??
Most green lasers in use by amateur astronomers range from 5 to 50 mw. This will be easily visible – if it actually is what it says it is (that has been a problem in this market). Of course, caution and simple consideration of others are critical aspects of owning and using these things.
ADDED: I will try to clarify. The range of power for most lasers used by amateur astronomers is from 5 to 50 mw. The 5 mw ones are a little on the dim side and sort of thin looking. The 50 mw ones (if they are really 50 mw) are bright and easy to see. This one that you have selected is advertised at 20 mw. If it is really at that level, it will be easy to see and easy to use. The problem is that some of the lasers out there are actually lower in power than advertised. There appears to be no standardized testing yet for these products, so you sort of have to rely on the experience of others. I am skeptical of the 20 mw claim in this case. I personally think that when you get it, it will perform more like a 5 – 10 mw laser. As is the case with most equipment in the amateur astronomy market, you will generally get what you pay for. For $22, you will probably get a laser that has an average output of roughly 8 mw. If you can, you should try before you buy.
ADDED: Generally, lasers start to burn things like dark colored balloons and trash bags at about 80 mw.
